Robeson Center book sale (10 am - 4 pm)
(Paul Robeson Community Center, 6569 S. Vermont Ave., LA, CA 90044 )
The Robeson Center is having its first ever sale of some of the vast numbers of books we have, but which don't fit into our collection. These books have been accumulated over the last 20 years from the lifetime collections of other book lovers, but they must go to make room for classroom and meeting space. If you love books, you won't want to miss this opportunity.:
biography * philosophy * fiction * classics
kids books * history * cook books and more
- they are all here looking for a new home.
Now, while we certainly don't mind the idea of making money off of them, we're most interested in freeing up the space they're taking, as well as having our community reading them. Therefore, you can expect to go home with all the books you want without worrying about any kind of dent in your budget think five cents, twenty five cents, fifty cents or a dollar per book.

The filmmaker spent nearly six years exploring her life and familial relationships in order to answer a very basic question... why? When Californians walk into doctors' offices, hospitals, and clinics in the years to come, how will their experiences be changed by the passage of federal health reform? How can we work together to put this legislation into effect in ways that improve the quality of the care we receive? That build on our state's successful models of high-value care? Addressing these questions at this event will be three of the state's most innovative healthcare leaders. Each was influential during the reform debate and responsible for pioneering practices that were models for federal legislation. They will share their candid opinions about the opportunities in federal reform implementation and discuss the challenges that lie ahead.
The event will be kicked off by Kavita Patel, MD, the new director of the Health Policy Program at the New America Foundation, who held a series of key positions in the Congress and White House during the legislative process that resulted in the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. For questions, contact Claudie Bustamante at (916) 448-5189 or bustamante@newamerica.net.

Anti-July 4th Picnic by Revolutionary Communist Party (12pm - 5pm)
(Echo Park Lake, north side off Glendale Blvd. & Park Ave)
From Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA (Centerfold of Revolution at revcom.us)
For the 4th of July — a fundraiser picnic to put Revolution on the map:
If you can conceive of a world without America—without everything America stands for and everything it does in the world—then you’ve already taken great strides and begun to get at least a glimpse of a whole new world. If you can envision a world without any imperialism, exploitation, oppression —and the whole philosophy that rationalizes it—a world without division into classes or even different nations, and all the narrow-minded, selfish, outmoded ideas that uphold this; if you can envision all this, then you have the basis for proletarian internationalism. And once you have raised your sights to all this, how could you not feel compelled to take an active part in the world historic struggle to realize it; why would you want to lower your sights to anything less?
Listen to: "What to the slave is your fourth of July? From the past to the present," - an excerpt from Revolution - Why It's Necessary, Why It's
Possible, What It's All About, a film of a speech by Bob Avakian.

South Central Neighborhood Council Vote (10am - 4pm)
(All People’s Christian Center, 822 E. 20th Street (San Pedro and Stanford), Los Angeles, CA)
From Ron Gonchez (candidate):
Dear friends, family, comrades and supporters,
Do you really support the work that we do? If so, we need your help! We have put together a VERY progressive slate that is running for all 9 seats on the South Central Neighborhood Council (SCNC)! How can you help? Print out the flier on my FB page and bring it when you come to vote for our slate this Saturday! If you can't make it, forward this l and flier to your contacts so they can come out and vote!
The SCNC is an official body that is recognized by the City of LA so if we are elected, it would bring a lot of more "legitimacy" to our struggle! For those of you who know me personally or know of the work that is done by the organizations that I belong to, you KNOW what kind of political work we would do if elected! Our enemies are also aware of what a victory for us would represent politically to the city of LA. For that reason, the slate that we are running against has the full support of the LAPD as well as the business community. The right wing is scared! They even posted a youtube video to try to scare people about the possibility of us winning these elections! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP4-cAO8epc
If you support progressive or revolutionary politics, we need YOUR support! We hope that we can count on your vote this Saturday! No worries, you don't have to have papers or even be registered to vote to be part of these elections but please read on to get all the info you will need to vote! If you need a ride, let us know and we'll pick you up and take you home after you vote!
Here is more information on our campaign…
WHO IS PART OF OUR SLATE?
Celina Benitez, Committee in Solidarity with the people of El Salvador
Clemente Franco, Attorney (Housing/Tenants Rights)
Cliff Smith (AKA Jubilee Shine), Roofers Union, Justice for Oscar Grant Committee
Erica Montelongo, MEChA de Santee High School
Julia Wallace, LA March 4th Committee
Jose Lara, United Teachers of Los Angeles, National Educators Association
Martha Sanchez, Community Organizer
Ron Gochez, Union del Barrio, Southern CA Immigration Coalition
Santos Zuniga, Union del Barrio
WHO CAN VOTE?
Anyone that lives, works, go to school (Santee HS, Jefferson HS, LA Trade Tech...etc), goes to church or is part of a community organization in the neighborhood. If you have proof of any of those things, please bring it but if you do not, you just have to state which one of those you fall under and that automatically makes you are a "stakeholder" in the South Central neighborhood so you can vote. You do NOT have to be a US Citizen or even be registered to vote! ID is NOT needed to vote! If you have any questions, please contact me ASAP. Thanks.
We are NOT politicians! We are community organizers!
This is what we PROMISE to struggle for:
1. Full employment with union jobs and living wages.
2. Money for Schools NOT Wars. Full funding for a quality public education! Raza and African-American Studies & Bilingual Education at all levels. Access to a college education for ALL.
3. Free quality health care for ALL
4. STOP the Foreclosures! Decent affordable housing for ALL!
5. Community control of the Police and Sheriff department. Stopping the LAPD from confiscating people's cars at "Sobriety Checkpoints" if they are not intoxicated.

7. End to the importation and promotion of drugs & alcohol in our communities
8. A Clean and Healthy Environment!

Urban Issues Breakfast Forum: “I am Oscar Grant” (7:30am - 9am)
(The Regency West (Leimert Park), 3339 W. 43rd Street)
Join Dr. Anthony A. Samad at the next breakfast forum to discuss the trial of the most controversial police shooting of the decade.
Oscar Grant was a 22 year old black male shot in the back and killed while on the ground in Oakland, California, by a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Officer. BART Officer, Johannes Mehserle, is the first police officer in the history of California to be tried for murder while acting in the line of duty. His trial was moved from Oakland to Los Angeles because of the publicity surrounding the case. The trial is ongoing in Los Angeles with essentially no local mainstream media coverage. Jury selection was completed last week by purging all five black juror prospects from jury consideration.
Come out and hear the trial analysis by those in the courtroom most familiar with the case.
