First! Thank you Catherine Cloutier! Looks so great to have our art experience celebrated online like this! and i'm so impressed reading everyone's comments. weeks now since the '20/20 Visionaries' the excitement continues to grow. we've had students in front of the murals outdoors, sketching! we've heard them in dialogue about content and technique. guests to the school have been immediately ushered to the walls to share in the thrill! i hear faculty colleagues imagining outloud the ways that they plan to incorporate the artwork. and i can testify to the fact that these huge demonstrations of shape and color are breathtaking, even at seven o'clock in the morning! -- making it a much better way to start the day.
we're excited to discover how fast word's spread about the project --- that MORE artists are interested in visiting our school. we currently have artwork on our walls from nearly forty-five different artists. and many of these are in direct 'dialogue' with student work - side by side and overtop, in interactive ways.
i must add that we have an afterschool club at manual arts that creates murals on campus. their work is equally brilliant and captivating. the artist/teacher from the program lent his own hand in the murals on the twentieth.
we look forward to further growth of the project. and appreciate the support of our colleagues and our administrators.
manual arts is one hundred years old this year. it's the oldest high school in LA still standing in its original footprint.
jackson pollock and philip guston were students here together.
we're proud of our students and the fine work they devote to the walls. AND proud of the chance to witness their being inspired by all of the artwork inside and out - their own and that of our artist/guests. manual arts has become a museum for what's real in art today, on the street, in our urban situation. a visual showcase. and the best part is it INCLUDES our students' voices - right alongside!
i think pollock and guston AND their teacher frederick john de st vrain schwankovsky are somewhere, very proud!

It's great to see professional gourmet chef come to a school and teach the kids how important it is to eat healthy. After I watched a few documentaries on the subject, we all are eating too much processed food and sugar. Which overall leads to diabetes and being overweight. This is a struggle our whole nation is dealing with. One thing I've been doing with my food is baking it from now on, I don't fry any of my food. And if I ever use oil, I use organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. A very healthy oil to use in your diet. I'm definitely going to pass this video around to my friends and family.

Would you be willing to give up a little to save the jobs

29 to 1 and 35 to 1 are not good numbers for teaching the skills that our kids need for them to be successful in middle and high school. Will you and your secondary brothers and sisters give up a little to help save the jobs of the 1,800 permanent elementary school teachers to save their jobs?

Oh, and by the way, the welfare office idea would be fitting for your town since Vegas has the highest numbers of welfare recipiants that I'm pretty sure out-number Inglewoods population! Nice shot though! With the recent changes having the "Used Car Preacher" Mayor Dorn stepping down, I would hope that we can finally get a real leader. The city still has far more benefits than you'd think the typical veiw it appears to be percived as, ie, Robert Orbea!

Hi Kelsey!

I actually stumbled across this story when I was at Manual Arts covering another story. It was pure luck, but it worked out for me.

If you would like to cover South LA, I could add you to my reporters list for Intersections. I send out a weekly email with story ideas like this one.

Let me know! My email is cloutier@usc.edu.

Thanks for the comment!

Please be careful to specify that the students you are referring to are the students who were involved, and not just students at UCSD in general. The students here at UCSD do not share a collective stand other than in opposition to such heinous behavior. I am so appalled words just cannot express it.
Fremont teachers, parents and students are protesting the reconstitution.

More than half of the faculty have signed a petition to not reapply to the school unless the application process is rescinded and teachers/parents are decision-makers in the reforms for next year.

Teachers had a community meeting with parents/community members last month with over 70 parents present. Most of them stayed after to plan phone calling and community walks to stop the reconstitution.

Tomorrow Feb 26 7am, Fremont parents, students and teachers will have a press conference in front of the school to update the city about what they are doing to stop the dismissal of the faculty and the closure of 12 small learning communities on campus.

I am a 69 year old WHITE male living in Compton, and I was disgusted at hearing about this "cookout". Compton is not an all black city. In fact, 65% of the residents are Hispanic, and there are many whites and other races in Compton as well. These students need to come to a Compton City Council meeting and make a public apology to all of the residents of Compton.
After their apology they may want to visit the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. Very educational!

What a shame, another piece of history disappears. I grew up in Inglewood and went to the Fox to see all of the late 60's and 70's flix. I used to live in Torrance as well and the city decided to sell their historic theater and put up CONDO's! For the love of money these heartless people see it fit to destroy something that they dont understand, art and history. Living in Vegas doesnt have the character Inglewood had before the gangs and other rif-raf moved in. I dont see anybody buying this gem since the neighborhood doesnt appreciate history and art. Maybe they can build a welfare office there, then you'll have a lot of foot traffic!

I do think this probably falls into the category of free speech, but that doesn't mean it has to go unnoticed. It's commendable that the university spoke out against it, but it's worth looking into ways that the university might be helping to support the fraternity, whether financially or with certain assistance it gives to organizations associated with the school. That might be a way it can show that it seriously finds such actions to be reprehensible.

Unfortunately, fraternity groups on campus always seem to bring out the worst in college students, and for some reason we always let them get away with it by saying we have no control, that they are independent, that it's free speech.

But there are always ways that a university assists or enables their presence on campus.
While it's fair to allow them their "free speech", it doesn't mean they can't learn that their consequences for irresponsible and offensive behavior.

Something I'm continually shocked by is how much our society is affected by the need for the latest and greatest cell phone, more than any other product.

I have now lived in several third world countries, and couldn't help but notice that my cab driver almost always had a better phone than me. Same when I return home and someone working at a local fast food chain pulls out the latest iphone from his pocket.

Why cell phones, in particular, have become so closely associated with status, around the world, is particularly disturbing. It seems people feel they can buy themselves a certain status by getting a certain quality of phone. That seems to make the consumerist culture even more dangerous, when products like these, we innately feel gives us some right to a certain kind of superiority. It's not just about buying because it's fun, we almost do see it as a necessity, and that's dangerous too.

Great article. As you point out, inter-generational teaching/learning is an essential element of any struggle for civil rights. And while it's important for young people to understand the struggles and contributions of those who came before them, it's equally important for all of us to know about those who came even before courageous people like Rosa Parks. Her watershed act did not come out of nowhere. Over a two-week period in April, 1947, Bayard Rustin, then of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, organized a group of black and white men to ride a series of buses throughout the south. Their goal was to raise awareness of a US Supreme Court ruling a year prior which outlawed racial segregation of passengers traveling on interstate motor carriers. During those two weeks, Rustin and many of the other black riders refused to sit at the back of buses. They were met with the same harassment, hostility and arrests that Ms. Parks experienced. But they also succeeded in tearing down a piece of the wall between black Americans and their full civil participation in society. Rosa Parks knew all about Rustin and his colleagues. It's imperative that our generation and those who come after us remember them as well.

Being introduced to music was very formative to my youth; it gave me a chance to genuinely participate in my community and with other youths. It was often the only thing that made me feel good about myself.

Yes, when we talk about suicide and ethnicity, it is generally perceived that suicide is a problem typically plaguing white males. However, it's not about race or color, it seems. It's about class. Middle class people are more likely to commit suicide than low or upper-middle class. I think, perhaps, that's because it can seem like the most hopeless struggle. People with less tend to help each other more and have more of a sense of community, people with a lot have plenty of options available for them in life, and everyone in between gets lost.

Don't you think that some kids hide in their rap music? I mean, it's like a refuge. But there is a vast difference between one kind and another. It seems that the more "commercialized" rap music gets, the more it gets corrupted by sexism, greed etc. Just compare Akon's debut album to his current stuff. Totally different. Same with Eminem. Both used to rap with feeling, and you could really feel it coming from the bottom of their souls. Now they just produce cheap club music about booty and booze. It used to be about struggle and determination. Check out Akon's "Ghetto" and Eminem's "'Till I Collapse".

I feel that once a person becomes involved in an issue, they are more likely to do it again. Also, seeing fellow students who care influences others.

This economy has been so hard on so many people. But the story an ex-convict speaking on "In His Own Words" opened another window for me.

I can't imagine training for work in prison and then -- as an ex-convict -- trying to find work and housing in this economy. And because he's on parole, he can't even go some place else where he might have a fighting chance to make a go of his life.

A very compelling story. Congrats to the reporters who sought out this story and took the time to tell us.

I love Harold & Belles. The Creole food is the best I've had in L.A., although a tad pricey, but they give big portions, and you'll probably be taking some home. Also try the Whiskey Bread Pudding for desert. The atmosphere is laid back, and usually standing room only in the bar area. It's just one big social affair. Harold & Belles is about two miles west of USC, on Jefferson.

I am so tired of the teacher bashing. We want to be there. It is the community and parents who aren't involved. Now our school is about to lose many competent teachers as the district and the mayor meddle in public education without true reform. Unforms are their idea of reform.

Maybe the mayor should ask himself to reflect on his behavior in school. Did he do his homework? Did he talk back to his teachers? Let's hear both sides.

Many teachers and parents are unhappy with the mayors parthership schools. No real achievments have been made.

What is truly neglected? The classroom. For all the talk of the importance of the teacher and the classroom, we have to buy our own paper and supplies, put up with disrespect, and now sweep and mop our own classrooms because a directive came down that because of budget cuts classrooms were no longer to be swept and mopped. But the bearacracies offices are.

The best of your posts in a long time, Shaun. Absolutely had me cracking up. Every time I think you can’t get any funnier, you go and write something like this.

I am very impressed with the stories of these murals. I had seen them but never knew the history. So much work had to go into gathering the details of a story such as this. Kudos to all involved!

The City Council is breaking the law by not allowing community members to sign up for speciic items and speak on them this is a Brown Act violation a very serious offense. One of a few crimes the District Attorney's office could actually prosecute these elected officials on in Compton. Although they all sit there quietly their mere refusal to even speak out against the instructions of the Mayor makes them co- conspirators. Prior to 2009 election you used to be able to sign up for specific items on the Agenda but the Mayor and his Council have changed our agenda to where you speak on agenda items and non agenda items at one time, whereas, before you spoke on them seperately. At one point he attempted to tell us we couldn't speak the councilperson's name specifically. Where he attempted to force us to accuse everybody on what one has done. He realized that dog couldn't hunt during turkey season. So then he forced us to speak on those agenda items at the same time we would speak on our audience comments. In an attempt to prevent us from pointing out specifically what item on the agenda gave Mayor Perrodin a campaign donation.
For the record it is not illegal to receive a campaign donation in Compton. It is illegal to receive a campaign donation in lieu of a vote(that's pro quo government). It is also illegal if others vote knowing that you have received a campaign donation from someone and protects you so you do not have to vote on that contract. It is circumventing the process. That is a 1090 violation and a crime. Not only does our City Charter find this to be a crime but the State of California finds this to be a crime. I want to remind people these items that are on the Agenda, are your tax dollars being spent on the Agenda. They are not mere words on the page.
The government is supposed to be inclusive. It is supposed to want to invite people in so they can be apart of the process. Our public officials do not want us to ask questions because they don't want us to know. So they refuse to answer a questions, which to me further magnifies the situation.
