Happy birthday Mr. President from Leimert Park

Dozens of residents gathered in Leimert Park Wednesday, Aug. 4, to celebrate President Barack Obama’s 49th birthday.

Organizing for America (OFA) hosted the celebration with cake, registration tables, and a dozen volunteers to raise political awareness and relay the message about the importance of voting. Drivers participated as well, honking their horns while driving through the intersections of Crenshaw and Vernon during the celebration.

President Obama was not in attendance, but OFA volunteer organizers Linda Coleman-Willis and Sandi Cook were. Along with other OFA volunteers, Coleman-Willis and Cook helped canvas Leimert Park Village and scout the community for new voters to register. People of all ages — ranging from 8 to 80 years old — came out to show their support with balloons and picket signs encouraging residents to vote in this November’s election.

Lively music accompanied the celebration and attendees sang Stevie Wonder’s version of "Happy Birthday" to honor President Barack Obama. "Happy Birthday Mr. President" and "Happy Birthday President Barack Obama" read the cakes shared among attendees at the birthday celebration.
