Transit Oriented District Community Workshop - Trade Tech (6 pm)
(LA Trade Tech College, Room T.E.
101 2215 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90007)

Imagine a neighborhood with safer routes to school, easier access to trains and buses, better places to live, work and play and greener, walkable and bikeable streets.

Last year, the Los Angeles Department of City Planning, with funding from the LA County Department of Public Health, began a community-based planning effort to create 10 new Transit Oriented Districts (TOD’s) along the Metro Blue and Green Lines in South Los Angeles. Based on field work, land-use analysis, community bike and walk audits and interactive community visioning, City Planners have now created draft plans for review at series of upcoming community workshops.

South Los Angeles suffers the highest morbidity and mortality rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity in Los Angeles County. Changing our neighborhoods to promote healthy activities such as walking and biking is one way we can help address this critical health issue. TOD’s can promote a healthier lifestyle by encouraging walking, biking and the use of mass transit. In addition, TOD’s can transform a neighborhood, generate investment, create jobs and provide residents with better places to live, work, and play.

Join us at a series of community workshops to share view the preliminary plan and share your ideas for the neighborhoods around each station.

Ride your bike to the Watts Towers on January 22nd, 2012 -- it is easier than you think!

Your stories from this ride will be used to produce a new map of South LA to show visitors how biking reveals the best of our neighborhood!

Meet at 10am at Augustus Hawkins Natural Park -- bring your ordinary cell phone or camera if you have one.

SPECIAL FEATURES: At the towers the Eastside Riders will host a bike tour of the community featuring the Watts Labor Community Action Center. At the starting park we will also have a short Bike Fitting and Maintenance workshop sponsored by Bikerowave and CICLE (a project of LA County RENEW).

BRING YOUR CELL PHONE OR CAMERA. We are also asking ride participants to bring their cellphones (any model) to take photos and text/voice notes along the ride to help make a map of our ride that can help promote more biking in South LA! This mapping project is in partnership with http://ParTour.net -- a project of USC Annenberg's Mobile Lab and the Metamorphosis project.

This ride is organized by the CicLAvia South LA Host Committee and T.R.U.S.T. South LA. Last year we successfully promoted the need for a pedestrian event on the scale of CicLAvia in South LA. In addition to the spoken word and dance performances, this year we will have a special guest presenting: A Tribute in Song, featuring acclaimed vocalist Lura Daniels-Ball, and directed by famed filmmaker, Charles Burnett (To Sleep with Anger, Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation).

This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Tribute in Song (“MLK: A Tribute in Song”) celebrates Dr. King through a multimedia presentation along with words and songs performed by Daniels-Ball, an alumna of USC’s world-renowned Thornton School of Music. Essentially, MLK: A Tribute in Song takes the audience on a musical journey highlighting the milestones of Dr. King’s legendary life that ended too soon almost 44 years ago on April 4, 1968.

Written by writer-producer, J.M. Morris -- a former King Center National Scholar and intern for Mrs. King – MLK: A Tribute in Song was inspired by her stage trilogy presented for three consecutive years in recognition of the King Holiday. The three entries in the series were: The Content of Their Character; The Content of Their Character: Courage; and The Content of Their Character: Religion.

The USC Bovard Auditorium is located at 3551 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles, CA 90089. For further information, please call (213) 740-9252 or email brass@usc.edu.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Tribute in Song is produced by J.M. Morris. The Executive Producers for the project are Heartsung Productions, JES III Productions and Thinkin’ Outta The Box Productions. The event’s accompanist is Danny Burgin.

Annual Los Angeles Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast (8 am - 10 am)
(Holman United Methodist Church [3320 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90018)

This year the Annual Los Angeles Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast will be sponsored for the first time by social justice organization Community Coalition and other labor, community groups. Legendary civil rights leader, Rev. James Lawson, is the event’s keynote speaker. Rev. Eric Lee and SCLC Los Angeles will receive Special Recognition Awards.

Local community and labor groups with strong ties to African American and Latino community in South Los Angeles are coming together to sponsor an annual Los Angeles tradition in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

This year’s breakfast will focus on the same issue that Dr. King fought for more than 40 years ago—income equality. African American and Latino residents living side-by-side in Los Angeles’ poorest community are facing some of the worst economic conditions in the United States today. These are the same issues that Dr. King took on in his Poor People’s Campaign in 1968 before he was assassinated. Jobs, income and housing were the issues tackled in 1968. These are still the issues that South L.A. faces today.

The breakfast will bring together some of Los Angeles’ leaders from faith, labor, elected office and community groups as well as both African American and Latino neighbors. KABC 7 News anchor Leslie Sykes is the Mistress of Ceremonies.

The event is part of Community Coalition’s series of events celebrating and honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King. Community Coalition is leading the “Occupy King’s Dream: We are the 99%” float with 200+ South L.A. residents at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012.

25th Annual Holiday Tour & Progressive Dinner: Silver Jubilee Celebration (3 pm)
(West Adams)

Silver Anniversary milestone event: visit the beautiful residences that grace the elegant streets of Lafayette Square.

Originally envisioned by George L. Crenshaw as one of the region’s premier real estate tracts before the area even became a part of Los Angeles in 1909, Lafayette Square’s design was based on European cities, inspired to bring a feeling of tradition and graceful style not widely found in a very young Los Angeles.

Crenshaw’s son Charles described the Square, and its central drive, St. Charles Place, as “a ‘Spanish pasear,’ a place where residents could stroll and meet socially.” Over time, Lafayette Square became home to many of Los Angeles’ luminaries including George Pepperdine, Sepulveda family descendent Princess Conchita Pignatelli, Fatty Arbuckle, Alexander Pantages, Norton Simon, boxer Joe Louis, singer Little Richard, and architect Paul R. Williams.

Come with us this holiday season to experience the founder’s vision, as we stroll door to door, and socialize over a sumptuous meal, served one course at a time in each of the lavishly-decorated homes we visit.

Prepaid Reservations are required for the Holiday Tour & Progressive Dinner.

Community meeting on Grim Sleeper case (5 pm)
(Bethel AME Church, 900 South Western Avenue, Los Angeles 90047)

Councilmember Bernard C. Parks and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck will host a community meeting regarding the current status of the violent serial murders of young South Los Angeles women, known as the “Grim Sleeper” case.

This forum will also be used to focus on the unidentified women depicted in photographs seized from Lonnie Franklin’s residence, in July 2010.The original 180 photographs of unknown women, put on display by LAPD in December 2010, have been reduced to the“Final 48.” Unfortunately as the photo grouping continues to be reduced, there may be increased likelihood that the women were victimized by Lonnie Franklin.

Lonnie David Franklin Jr. was a member of the South Los Angeles community his entire adult life and continues to be the focus of the Task Force investigation. The photographs made public since his arrest have also been members of the community.A flyer depicting the still unidentified women will also be handed out in an effort to encourage community participation in identifying the photographs.

Task Force detectives will be on hand to answer questions about the continuing investigation; however, will be limiting their response regarding the court proceedings of the eleven counts already being prosecuted.

South Los Angeles Beautification Project (9 am)
(Century Blvd., on Interstate 110-S on/off ramps)

For better or worse, the freeway on and off ramps are the front doors to many South Los Angeles neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the present condition sends the wrong message, making entry to South LA feel frightening and looking more like a third- world country than the United States of America. Under the leadership of the board of directors of Watts Gang Task Force (WGTF) has partnered with CalTrans who have agreed to join the South Los Angeles Beautification Project and turn this into a quarterly event. The South LA on/off ramps will be cleaned, landscaped, graffiti removed and welcoming signage posted. In summary, beautified.

The first South Los Angeles Beautification Project will be held on October 29th at Century Blvd., on Interstate 110-S on/off ramps, starting at 9:00am. TreePeople has agreed to partner with us and assist in neighborhood tree planting efforts. Coffee, snacks and lunch will be provided, along with t-shirts and hats for the volunteers.

Every dollar counts! As a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization, a tax-deductible receipt will be issued to you on behalf of Watts Gang Task Force, and you will be mentioned in all event publicity. CalTrans, LAPD, California Governor Jerry Brown, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Los Angeles City Council Office #15, Los Angeles Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and local businesses will be assisting in this effort.

Donations and/or volunteer time and effort are highly appreciated! Please contact Tanna Moore at tmoore@challc.com or (310)826-1342 who will provide instruction on how to donate and participate in this inspiring event. LAPD will be present to provide public safety and safe passage.

The Mobile Voice of L.A.‘s Immigrants (7 pm)
(USC Gin Wong Auditorium, Harris Hall 101)

Reception with live music to follow.

Admission is free and open to everyone.

image

A provocative evening of performance, media art and rebel phones will highlight three extraordinary projects that support immigrant communities in Los Angeles using mobile-phone devices. The controversial Transborder Immigrant Tool, an app by Ricardo Dominguez and the Electronic Disturbance Theater, helps sustain those crossing the border into the United States by providing directions to water and poetry. Voces Móviles/Mobile Voices (VozMob), a collaboration between USC’s Annenberg School and the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California, helps day laborers record and share their stories using cell phones. The LA Flood Project delivers a locative media narrative about crises in Los Angeles—both historical and imagined. The evening will also include photographs by Maria de Lourdes González Reyes, a reading by Roberto Leni-Olivares and a discussion moderated by USC Annenberg professor Josh Kun. Write your own flood account via Twitter: @LaFloodProject or #laflood (October 20-27).

Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Murals Open to Visitors for One Day Only (Noon)

Open House in the Heart of Historic West Adams Sponsored by West Adams Heritage Association and CAAM, California African American Museum

A rare opportunity to view the historic murals that grace the lobby of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance building, located in the heart of Historic West Adams, when West Adams Heritage Association (WAHA) presents a tour from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m., hosted in collaboration with CAAM--the California African American Museum, Los Angeles Conservancy and The Mural Conservancy LA.

The murals, which depict early African American contributions to the building of California, are an integral element of the new exhibit that just opened at CAAM, “Places of Validation, Art & Progression.” This exhibit, which runs through April 1, 2012, is CAAM’s contribution to the city-wide series of exhibitions being produced under the umbrella PACIFIC STANDARD TIME: Art in L.A. 1945-1980.

October 22nd tour goers will be visiting the iconic Golden State Mutual Life Insurance building, designed by architect Paul Williams in 1947 for the first African American-owned insurance company established west of the Mississippi. The Late Moderne building with its notable integrated murals by artists Charles Alston and Hale Woodruff was recently designated HCM 1000, Los Angeles' newest Historic Cultural Monument.

The murals are currently endangered, threatened with removal. This might be the public's last chance to view them. The open house is spearheaded by WAHA’s long-running efforts of preservation advocacy to save the murals.

The relevance to the art world of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company is the ground-breaking support this enterprise provided to emerging African American artists. The lobby and office walls were showcases to a wide array of notable artists, including William Pajaud, Charles White, Betye Saar and John Riddle.

Tourgoers will also receive a copy of WAHA’s most recent publication, “West Adams' Landmarks of African American History,” a unique compendium of photos and brief biographies of more than 70 prominent African Americans who lived in the West Adams area of Los Angeles and includes information about their homes in West Adams. Advance tickets are $15.00 and are available at www.WestAdamsHeritage.org for the afternoon open house, or call CAAM (213) 744-7536 or -7432 regarding the morning bus tour which includes visiting the murals and St. Elmo Village.

Written in 1886, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is the story of one man plagued by two distinct personalities, one moral and kind, the other, immoral and cruel. Looking for a cure for human depravity, Dr. Jekyll concocts a potion that splits him in two. At first he can control the rages, but soon Mr. Hyde gains a power all his own and Dr. Jekyll begins transforming spontaneously.

Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher’s 2008 adaptation of Stevenson’s novella is beautifully done, capturing the raw energy of the original and focusing the audience on the story’s major themes of identity and morality by using multiple Hydes portrayed by members of the cast. For the CSU Dominguez Hills production one of those Hydes will be performed by a woman. Directing “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is CSU Dominguez Hills theatre arts lecturer and alumna Naomi Buckley.

To see a short promotion video for the production, visit: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150461934628677

Two special events will be associated with the production:

Campaign to Protect Community Clinics Launches (6-8 pm)
(St. John’s Well Child & Family Center Auditorium, 5801 S. Hoover Street, Los Angeles, 90037)

Hundreds of South LA patients, healthcare workers and residents will kick off a campaign Wednesday to stop potential cuts by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors that could leave thousands of families without medical treatment.

LA County Supervisors are considering major cuts to funding for community clinics that provide healthcare for children, the elderly and people with disabilities in South Los Angeles, the most medically underserved area in Los Angeles County.

“The clinic in my community helps keep my five-year-old daughter out of the emergency room and healthy,” said Brenda Catalan, a patient at St. John’s Well Child & Family Center in South Los Angeles. “Services are already strapped and if the Supervisors cut further it could mean my daughter’s health suffers.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who has pledged to protect funding for South LA, will be attending the campaign launch.

Pushing the Boundaries:  Adventurers, Pioneers and Unconventional Heroes
(Pushing the Boundaries: Adventurers, Pioneers and Unconventional Heroes)

The marble angels at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery watch over many of Los Angeles’s earliest settlers and later innovators alike, along with politicians, war heroes, more than a few scurrilous entrepreneurs, trendsetters, women’s rights advocates, and a long list of famed entertainers.

Every year, West Adams Heritage Association (WAHA) focuses on some of their life stories by presenting a Living History Tour at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, featuring actor portrayals, graveside, recounting the lives of some of the individuals buried at the cemetery. This year’s tour, the 21st annual Living History Tour, “Pushing the Boundaries: Adventurers, Pioneers and Unconventional Heroes,” is Saturday, September 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Angelus Rosedale Cemetery is one of the city's oldest, most historically significant cemeteries. It was founded in 1884, and is now home to many generations of Los Angeles's citizens, representing every race, faith, and creed.

This year’s event commemorates several seminal moments in local and national history: the 150th anniversary of the Civil War; the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in California, and Los Angeles’s 230th birthday. And, along with bold adventurers, this year’s tour includes founding families who have left their mark on L.A.’s history: Glassell, O’Melveny and Dominguez.

This year’s dramatic portrayals include:

• Lt. William T. Glassell, Confederate Naval officer who commanded the submarine that torpedoed the Union frigate New Ironsides during the Charleston blockade in 1863. Glassell was the co-founder of the City of Orange

• Miriam Matthews, California’s first African American credentialed librarian and well-known historian who helped launch “Negro History Week” (now Black History Month) in Los Angeles; Matthews’ research of 200 years of black history in California inspired the depictions in the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building’s murals, just designated as Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument No. 1000

• Harvey K. S. O’Melveny, pioneer Los Angeles lawyer, judge, City Council member, and politician who helped bring transcontinental rail service to Los Angeles in 1876

• Fanny Stenhouse, famed lecturer and Suffragette who exposed Mormon polygamy to the world in 1872, and who campaigned for women’s rights with Harriett Beecher Stowe and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

• Nina Vitagliano Torre, Italian-American female racecar driver who raced with fellow women Speederettes during World War I until a fatal crash in 1918 ended her life, and their careers on the track; it was decades before women were again behind the wheel on speedways.

• Portus Baxter Weare, whose self-named ship, the P.B. Weare, was the first to sail up the great Yukon River into the Klondike, bringing back great stores of gold and stories that resulted in the Klondike Stampede of 1897, when more than 100,000 people swarmed towards a frozen land they knew nothing about and endured hardships they could never have imagined

Visitors will be greeted by Francisca Dominguez Alexander, Queen of the Fiesta de Los Angeles of 1897, whose family owned the great Rancho San Pedro beginning in 1784. Her forebear, Juan Jose Dominguez, arrived in California in 1769, serving with Gaspar de Portolà and Juniperro Serra, witnessing the founding of Los Angeles pueblo in September, 1781.

Tours depart approximately every 25 minutes, beginning at 9 a.m., with the last tour at noon. The public is invited. Tickets are by advance reservation only; each tour has a limited number of spaces. The Living History Tour is a three-hour docent-led walk through the cemetery, over uneven terrain; visitors are advised to wear appropriate clothing and walking shoes.

TICKET SALES/TOUR TIMES

Advance Ticket Sales Only -- No Walk-ins!

Tickets are by reservation only. $25 in advance. $30 on day of tour, space available. (Children under 10 attend free.)

Dorothy Roberts book signing (7-9 pm)
(Eso Won Bookstore, 4331 Degnan Blvd. Leimert Park 90008)

Dorothy Roberts, a lawyer and sociology professor, examines the idea of "race as a political system," bringing science, law, commerce, and "race" ideologies in the book The Fatal Invention: How Science and Politics, and Big Business Re-Create Race in the Twenty-First Century. After demonstrating how, historically, "race was literally manufactured by law to mistreat non-white people," and offering an admirably intelligible account of genomic theory, she considers the extent to which the new approaches "tend to merely repackage "race" as a genetic category rather than replace it." DNA becomes a "marketable commodity," one consequence being that "race soon became the linchpin for turning the vision of tomorrow's personalized medicine into today's profit-making drugs." As she assesses the "new biopolitics of race," she argues that "Race-based medicine gives people a morally acceptable reason to hold onto their belief in racial difference."

(Angeles Mesa Presbyterian Church -Scott Hal, 3751 W. 54th St., Los Angeles, CA 90043)

Crenshaw /LAX Transit Corridor Advancing to Next Phase

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) gave approval to release the Final Environmental Impact Statement/Report (FEIS/R) for the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor.

The FEIS/R will be presented to the Metro Board of Directors Sept. 22 for their action. Approval by the Metro Board is necessary to move the project to the construction phase.

"For more than 50 years Los Angeles has waited for a rail line connecting the Crenshaw Corridor to LAX. That sound you hear is this train finally moving out of the station. Today we took one large step forward to putting 7,800 people to work constructing the Crenshaw Line," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said.

"We have asked the federal government to change their rules and regulations so that we can award contracts to construct this and other lines to local companies who hire local workers. Creating jobs is important to all of us, but putting Angelenos back to work is my top priority," said Villaraigosa.

"FTA approval of the environmental document for the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor represents a big step forward," said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. "The Crenshaw/LAX Line represents one of the largest public works projects in South Los Angeles. This $1.76 billion investment will bring much needed jobs, economic development, congestion relief and improve air quality along the corridor. I applaud the FTA for working with Metro staff in ensuring environmental approval."

A community open house is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 13. The open house will present the same information as the previous community open house held July 19 in Inglewood. The information stations at the open house will be staffed by project experts and will include copies of the FEIS/R, plan sets, and boards illustrating key elements of the FEIS/R including alignment, stations and maintenance facility locations, and environmental impacts and mitigations

Only 12 percent of black fourth-grade males are proficient in reading, compared with 38 percent of white males. Black males drop out of high school at nearly twice the rate of white males. These are staggering statistics addressed in the documentary, "Beyond the Bricks," a project launched by the Ford Foundation that utilizes documentary film and a national community engagement initiative to promote solutions for one of America’s critical problems - the consistently low performance of black males in public school. This is the first time this event comes to Los Angeles. After the film screening, there will be a panel discussion regarding solutions to the black male student achievement gap, which will be attended by Mayor Villaraigosa and other prominent community leaders.

Watch atrailer of the film.

South Central farm tour in Bakersfield (7:30 am-8 pm)
(Leave from: SCF Community Centro 1702 E. 41st St. Los Angeles, CA 90058)

...Take a field trip to the South Central Farm and get to know your local farmers and get your hands dirty....

Experience sweat and beauty of the South Central Farmers in Bakersfield, CA! Our monthly "Sweat is Beautiful!" farm tour includes a lively tour of the farm, communal farming and harvesting food for a healthy cookout.

The extended farm operated by the South Central Farmers’ Cooperative in Bakersfield, CA is about small-scale farmers bringing high quality organic produce that’s affordable and accessible to all communities. From the moment a tiny seed is sown in the fields to long days of hard labor we can't stop thinking about the health of our children and families in the community who deserve to eat farm fresh organic produce.

As ordinary people who started growing food in South Central LA out of real needs to feed our own families we came to share a collective vision of working towards an equitable food system that addresses community’s food security, health, growing food appropriate to our cultures, passing down sustainable farming practices and cultivating the next generation of farmers.

Since the forced eviction and bulldozing of the 14-acre South Central Farm in 2006 we have spent the past five years standing firm on our commitment to food justice, food sovereignty and feeding families in low income communities by commuting to a leased land in Bakersfield to plant, maintain and harvest our "certified organic" produce. As a result, we are able to establish LA’s most successful people of color farmers cooperative that now supports LA's largest Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program with over 3,000 participants, 28 drop off sites and 13 farmers market stands to date. In the meantime, the battle to restore the original farm on 41st and Alameda in South Central LA continues (see below).

Come visit the farm, get dirty and sweat under the blazing sun together to experience what it takes to sustain the vision of the South Central Farmers and learn all about the exciting new projects underway. Yes, farming is hard labor but we find so much beauty in the work we do. So, bring your family and friends for a day of "Sweat is Beautiful" Farm Tour with the South Central Farmers in Bakersfield, CA.

Aqui Estamos y No Nos Vamos! See you soon!!!
