From the Ashes: The 1992 Civil Unrest and the Rise of Social Movement Organizing (9 am)
(University Park Campus
Davidson Conference Center)
A conference marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 civil unrest in Los Angeles, charting a city on the rise.
On April 29, 2012, it will be 20 years since the beginning of that tumult. And just as the media missed much of the real story then — portraying it as a black-white or black-Korean conflict, downplaying the pervasive economic distress that drove the unrest, and focusing on divisive racial politics in the immediate aftermath — reporters are likely to swoop into the city as they have on previous anniversaries, trekking to the communities hardest hit in search of continued conflict, tension and poverty.
What they will likely leave out are the everyday efforts of grassroots organizers and ordinary residents to better their lives, and the flowering of a set of vibrant, multiracial social movements that have brought the city and the region a living wage, a better transportation system, college prep in all our schools, a more welcome stance toward immigrants, and a set of community benefits agreements that have become a model for progressive America. It is that story — how we rose as a region from contradictions to coalitions, from growing apart to standing together — that is relevant for a country still reeling from the deepest economic and political crisis in modern times.
Join us on Thursday, April 26, for a look back and, more importantly, a look forward at what the lessons of social movement organizing in Los Angeles might mean for a national agenda and the emerging social movement possibilities symbolized by (but not limited to) Occupy Wall Street.

For the 5th year in a row, “Siggi Dimanche: A Celebration of Francophone Africa and the French-speaking Diaspora,” will take place in the historic Leimert Park Village.
This year’s program, the theme of which is in celebration of African women writers, will feature an array of tandem French/English readings of classical and contemporary Francophone African literature. Presenters and readers scheduled to participate include noted scholars Polly and Allen Roberts of UCLA; Shireen Lewis of Washington, DC; and Dr. David Horne of California State University, Northridge; Actors CCH Pounder (The Shield, Warehouse 13), Lorraine Toussaint (Saving Grace); Richard Gant (Men of a Certain Age); and the Hon. Cynthia McKinney, former United States Congresswoman from Georgia and former Green Party presidential candidate, will join the festivities via Skype.
Attendees will again be treated to musical artistry provided by DJ Nnamdi of Radio Afrodicia (KPFP 90.7 FM) as well as a representative sampling of food and drink.
“Siggi,” a Wolof word from Senegal meaning ‘Keep your head up,” and “Dimanche,” the French word for Sunday, is the passion of Kymberly S. Newberry, a Los Angeles-based dramatic artist and performer. “This is an inspired celebration of Francophone literature, art, music, cultural iconography, narratives, life-motivating stories and tone-talking,” said Newberry. “It is about providing an annual conducive environment for African and African descendant vocal and visual spirits to swirl together, convene in one place briefly and jump for joy.”

TWILIGHT: Los Angeles, 1992
(The Skylight Theatre
1816 N Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90027)
LosAngeles, CA – Twenty years after the devastating turmoil that followed a failed conviction of the officers in the Rodney King trial, Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles 1992 explores the shades of that loss. Commissioned by the Mark Taper Forum and originally brought to life on stage by the playwright, twenty-five multi-ethnic actors from Katselas Theatre Company now recreate those characters at the Skylight Theatre.
“The video of the Rodney King beating, which seemed to ‘tell all,’ apparently did not tell enough. We need to reach for the core of our humanity with all its glory and all its challenges. I am looking to illuminate something about our humanness. The solutions lie not in my monologues but in the collaborative humanness of the audience, who walk out of the theater with a potential to make change.” – Anna Deavere Smith
It has been almost 20 years since this piece premiered in Los Angeles at the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum, yet these issues are currently in the forefront of a national debate.
Not only the people portrayed on stage, but each member of the audience feels a part of the play, which is composed of verbatim excerpts from interviews. - LA Times
Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 engages another generation and documents a critical time of racial division and civil unrest, not to place blame for what happened, but to help the process of healing through a kaleidoscopic and sympathetic rendering of different viewpoints. Accolades include an Obie, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle awards, and two Antoinette Perry nominations. Made possible through special arrangement with Dramatist Play Service, Inc.
TWILIGHT: Los Angeles, 1992 runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm, Sundays at 7pm April 20-29, 2012.
Tickets are $15-$20. Reservations: 702 KTC-TKTS (702-582-8587) or online at www.ktctickets.com

The daylong fair, which is designed to connect students and members of the community with local unions and organizations that are doing social justice work, starts off with a program for local high school students beginning at 9 a.m., and continues throughout the afternoon with informational booths and workshops hosted by more than 50 community groups and labor organizations. Other visitors include students from many of the community colleges throughout Los Angeles.
This year’s event has expanded to include five subthemes in addition to labor: the military and prison industrial complex, inequality, immigration, the environment, and education. Groups working on campaigns on these issues, who have internships, jobs, and legal or practical resources will be present. Another innovative feature this year is the interactive events that are being planned every hour throughout the day around these subthemes, including performances, art happenings, music, and other surprises in keeping with social justice.
Additionally, this year the fair is coordinating its activities with Unity Fest, an annual multicultural festival on campus, which will be held in the Sculpture Garden and will offer music and cultural programming.
“It’s only fitting that unity and social justice work together,” said Vanessa Lopez, labor studies student and event organizer.
The fair is sponsored by the Diane Middleton Foundation, the Associated Students, Inc., the College of Arts and Humanities, the CSUDH Center for Service Learning, Internships and Civic Engagement, Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, and a growing list of unions, including the Los Angeles Federation of Labor, the American Federation of Teachers Los Angeles College Faculty Guild Local 1521, and the California Faculty Association.
The fair will continue its tradition of introducing new students to the university and to the Labor Studies Program. The Labor Studies Program has been a part of CSU Dominguez Hills since 1977 and is the only such bachelor’s degree program at a state-supported university in Southern California.
On-campus parking is available. Daily parking permits are $4 and can be purchased using cash, credit or debit cards at kiosk machines located in each lot. CSU Dominguez Hills is located at 1000 E. Victoria St., in Carson.

Crenshaw Subway Coalition Community Meeting (12:30-2pm)
(Angeles Mesa Elementary School Auditorium, 2611 W. 52nd Street, L.A. 90043 (corner of 52nd Street & 5th Avenue))
Join us for our community meeting this Saturday as we plan for the SHOWDOWN AT MTA where we will swarm the April 26 MTA board meeting to request adoption of "The People's Motion."
ABOUT "THE PEOPLE'S MOTION"
Metro has two major requirements when building a major project: 1) It has to be studied (i.e. environmentally cleared through an Environmental Impact Report); and 2) it has to be funded.
Though the Leimert Park Village station has NOT been funded by Metro, it has been environmentally cleared. This means that if the construction firms bidding on the Crenshaw-LAX Line contract bid low enough or if the project budget is increased, the station can be built as part of the line.
Comparatively, the Park Mesa Heights tunnel, which would change the street-level section on Crenshaw Blvd from 48th to 59th Street to underground has NOT been environmentally cleared. This means that even if bids are low enough to integrate the tunnel into the project or additional resources are added to the project budget, the tunnel still could not be built. This is major procedural hurdle that impedes all elements of our and our elected official's attempts to make the tunnel possible.
The People’s Motion is a request for Metro to simply study the Park Mesa Heights tunnel so that bids can be requested that integrate the option into the project. At stake is the last black business corridor in all of Los Angeles, the lives of our children, and our quality of life.

SoLA Food Co-op organizational meeting
(Lotus On The Nile Wellness Center
4307 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles, CA)
Aren’t you tired of driving to Hollywood, Culver City and Santa Monica to buy fresh organic foods? As gas prices soar, now more than ever we need to be able to shop for the healthy foods we prefer right here in our community! Since last June, a group of like- minded individuals have been meeting and planning a solution to the problem of all those retail dollars leaving our community, the solution is SoLA Food Co-op.
Perhaps you came to a meeting or two, or maybe you signed our mailing list at the Good Food festival,a dig in, or some other event. Perhaps you signed up on the website, at any rate you are receiving this letter because at some point you expressed interest in being a part of a natural Co-op grocery in South Los Angeles. We aim to open a full service natural foods grocery right here in our neighborhood. A place not only to shop for food, but a place to learn about eating healthier, cooking healthier, and healing ourselves through nutrition. A place to meet up with friends to share a bite or even to hold a function. Best of all, a co-op is a member-owned store governed democratically by a board of directors who represent you. The members will help shape this store and share in the profits. If this is a new concept to you, check out Co-Opportunity, a well established co-op in Santa Monica.
While it’s been a few months since we called a general meeting, the SoLA steering committee has been hard at work. There are some new developments and tactics on the table. Now the time has come to plan and organize our first fundraiser, set for mid June 2012. Please come and lend your skills, bring friends, neighbors, any one who is interested in the cause of having our own natural food hub in south L.A. It’s time to expand the steering committee so we can move forward. We specifically need people with legal skills, retail management skills, construction ,accounting, and design skills, and people who are good at marketing, networking and getting the word out. Even if none of that sounds like you , if you have TIME to donate, we can use you ! Many of you have expressed interest, but haven't yet shown up to a meeting, so please come and show your solidarity with this cause. Why wait?
We hope to add your voice to the pool on April 10th
Refreshments will be served.

Special thanks to the Inglewood main Library, Anne Cheek LaRose, the wulf., the DEW Foundation, City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Downtown Artist Space, Ear Meal webcast, & laartstream.com. Very special thanks to Eric KM Clark and Michael Winter for their support.
Short Bios on participating artists:
Mona Kasra is a new media artist and educator currently pursuing a PhD at University of Texas at Dallas with a focus on emerging media and communication. In her work, Mona often addresses her Persian background, and questions social, cultural and traditional assumptions that she, as an Iranian born woman, grew up with. Her videos tend to be poetic autobiographies, revealing her curiosities, memories, fears, and insecurities.
Jeffrey James Mohr is an artist in Los Angeles, originally from Spokane, Washington. He works simutaneously in video, sculpture, installation and sound. He has shown throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Mohr is the former director of Treehouse Gallery and co-founder of the short-lived but notoroius inter-disciplinary art space AM project, both were located in Downtown Los Angeles.
Alan Nakagawa, sound artist based in Los Angeles. He is an inter-disciplinary artist that melds visual practices with sound and video. Primarily creating work through automatic techniques and improvisation, inherently campaigning to make humanized technology driven art, and giving the neat and the messy equal opportunity. Nakagawa co-founded arts collective Collage Ensemble Inc. (1984-2012), curates the weekly Ear Meal Webcast, coordinates public art for the LA Metro, documents his meals, is a member of Ear Diorama Ear, Dick Wood Jazz Group and the Southern California Soundscape Ensemble.
Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist. His working process uses various forms of specific notation (words, musical scores, maps, etc.) and translates them through self invented systems into scores; which then influence the process of painting, drawing, sculpture, and sound composition. These scores, rigid in terms of their parameters and rules, are also full of holes for intuitive decisions and left turns. The inspirational source material becomes a kind of formal skeleton that the abstract finished works are built upon.
Casey Anderson is an artist working in a number of media, including composition, improvisation, electronic music, saxophone, text, and installations. He has performed with Jason Kahn, Ulrich Krieger, MKM, Fomoudou Don Moye, Michael Pisaro, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Mark Trayle, and the Dog Star Orchestra. Performances, exhibitions, and residencies include MOCA – Los Angeles (CA), ISSUE Project Room (NY),
STEIM (NL), Atlantic Center for the Arts (FL), and Mass MOCA (MA). He currently lives and teaches in Los Angeles, California, and works with Machine Project.
Daniel Corral is a composer and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Eagle River, AK. Currently residing in the L.A. area, his unique voice has found a diverse range of outlets. He has accompanied avante-garde puppetry all across the USA, had his music performed by an orchestra riding the Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel, been featured at a USC faculty concert of original player piano music, displayed his massive multi-movement music boxes at galleries all over Los Angeles, composed for a number of films and dance performances, and much more.
Corey Fogel says, “I am a musician living in, CA. I play drums, compose, and improvise in many musical and performance art capacities. As a soloist I create long, surreal narratives of unorthodox sounds and awkward, vaguely familiar motions. I accompany dance, film and other media. I also choreograph visual/gestural installations. Most of my creations rely heavily on improvisation within a framework that is born out of unpredictable encounters with materials, instruments, circumstances, personas, and general aesthetic interests.”
Matt Barbier (CIM-BM/CalArts- MFA) is an LA based trombonist and composer focused primarily in the field of experimental intonation and noise music. Working collaboratively with composers such as Wolfgang von Schweinitz, Ulrich Krieger and Douglas Wadle, he eagerly engages with the emerging field of just intonation for brass instruments. Trio Kobayashi, of which he is a founding member, is dedicated to performing the music of Wolfgang von Schweinitz. This ensemble continues to evolve through relationships with composers including Larry Polansky, Marc Sabat, and Nicholas Deyoe.
James Klopfleisch is a composer/performer currently living in Los Angeles. His work lies on the fault line between music + performance/event, presenting itself somewhere between the framing of sound in time and the relations between ever blurring historical genres + contemporary listening habitats. His work focuses on engaging processes that focus on sound but often draw in situational and spectacle elements. He has written for:
Car alarms, coughers, tape, cell phone field-recordings, sandwich with a God-Complex, rolling objects, flash drive, as well as most normal instruments; performed on Contrabass, electric bass, and objects; and organized events between a moment and 7 days in duration.
Heather Lockie is a violist, composer and teaching artist based in Los Angeles. She teaches improvisation on violin/viola, classical viola and piano. She also uses the banjo, paints, sings songs and writes folk music. She is currently completing her master’s in music at California Institute of the Arts where she has been investigating overlapping disciplines: music composition, microtonalism, songwriting and puppetry/electronics within performance/installation context. Currently she teaches tiny children to unleash tiny noises on tiny violas and performs in various musical capacities in Los Angeles.
Liam Mooney is a composer (and performer) of experimental music, designer of noisy sounds, and inventor of unwieldy musical instruments. His work continues to focus on the sonic possibilities of everyday objects and on the physical properties of sound. Recent projects have involved popcorn, drinking straws, plastic bottles, soap, rubber bands, PVC pipes, dry ice, toy instruments, yogurt, balloons, drums, electric fans, foam, music boxes, and vacuum cleaners.
Christine Tavolacci is a flutist who has devoted much of her time and study to the performance of contemporary and experimental music. Christine has traveled across the United States and Europe to study and perform.
Rick Bahto is an artist working primarily with 8 mm film, photography, sound, and performance currently living in Los Angeles. Recent projects include Cave Creek. Winter canon. 2011. for three Super 8 projectors, which was commissioned by and premiered on the Monday Evening Concerts series in Los Angeles; the documentary/performance hybrid Documents for Super 8 film, 35 mm slides and audio cassettes created and performed in two parts at MOCA in Los Angeles; and For Paul Clipson created as part of his LA AIR artist-in-residency at the Echo Park Film Center that involves 35 mm and Super 8 film.
Madison Brookshire is a Los Angeles-based artist whose interdisciplinary work investigates modes of perception and qualities of time. He has shown his work widely, including screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Migrating Forms, Los Angeles Filmforum and REDCAT. He has also had solo exhibitions at Parker Jones in Culver City and Presents Gallery in Brooklyn, a residency at the Hammer Museum and performances at the wulf., The Lab, Betalevel and Artists’ Television Access. He received his BA in cinema and philosophy from Binghamton University and his MFA in Film and Video from the California Institute of the Arts.
Eric KM Clark: Accomplished violinist, composer, and improviser Eric KM Clark presents many different styles of new music throughout the world, with the majority of his shows taking place in Los Angeles, Toronto, and New York City. He has worked with many of the world's most innovative artists and ensembles, including the late James Tenney, Jurg Frey, Michael Gordon, Richard Foreman, Guy Maddin, Wadada Leo Smith, Christian Kesten, Michael Pisaro, and Butch Morris. Mr. Clark is a member of the genre setting new music ensemble The California E.A.R. Unit (LA), the Dog Star Orchestra (LA), neithernor (TOR), and the Kadima String Quartet (LA). His playing has been released on Innova, New World, Tonehole Music, Sundialtech and Tzadik (Spring 2012). His compositions have been released on Henceforth Records and CQB.
Sepand Shahab is a Los Angeles-based composer and harpsichordist working in a variety of media. His recent works center around field recordings and incorporate open instrumentation, computer-generated tones, and chance procedures.
Michael Winter is a composer, curator, music theorist, and software designer. he co-founded and co-directs (with fellow composer eric km clark) the wulf., a non-profit arts organization that presents music free to the public in los angeles. michael is a firm believer in music making as an experimental process and free information; e.g. open source code, free music, etc..

Town Hall On Sheriff Department’s New Task Force (6 pm)
(Imperial Church of Christ
11316 South San Pedro Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90061)
The Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) will hold a town hall meeting to discuss the introduction of the Los Angeles Sheriff Department’s new task force -- comprised of the department’s top brass -- to address recent allegations of excessive force.
Invited speakers will include the representatives from American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Congress of Racial Equality, the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review, the Sheriff’s Department and more.
“CAB has always maintained a high profile within the Sheriff Department and they have always appreciated our involvement and recommendations, “said Dr. Sandra Moore, Chair of CAB.
CAB is a faith-based community advocate group that has closely monitored and reported on local jails to investigate allegations of excessive force, deputy misconduct and inmate abuse over the last seven years.
Moore said CAB will also release their report of the Women’s Facility in Lynwood and make recommendations about the need to rebuild the Men’s Central Jail and effectively change the prison culture that contributes to deputy misconduct.
“As a result of our ongoing work with the Sheriff Department, CAB will assist the department with recruiting and screening qualified local applicants,” said Moore. “The CAB Civilian Screening Center will be based at the Imperial Church of Christ to help local residents identify employment opportunities within the department.”
The CAB Screening Center will be one of the first community-based centers to assist with recruitment. The sheriff's recruitment team is expected to send out a county-wide invitation later to solicit other community groups to participate in the sheriff’s “Help to Effect Change” program.
The event has free parking on and off site and is wheelchair accessible. For more information about the meeting contact Marshall Moultry, Co-Chairman of CAB at, (323) 756-0360.

101 2215 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90007)
Imagine a neighborhood with safer routes to school, easier access to trains and buses, better places to live, work and play and greener, walkable and bikeable streets.
Last year, the Los Angeles Department of City Planning, with funding from the LA County Department of Public Health, began a community-based planning effort to create 10 new Transit Oriented Districts (TOD’s) along the Metro Blue and Green Lines in South Los Angeles. Based on field work, land-use analysis, community bike and walk audits and interactive community visioning, City Planners have now created draft plans for review at series of upcoming community workshops.
South Los Angeles suffers the highest morbidity and mortality rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity in Los Angeles County. Changing our neighborhoods to promote healthy activities such as walking and biking is one way we can help address this critical health issue. TOD’s can promote a healthier lifestyle by encouraging walking, biking and the use of mass transit. In addition, TOD’s can transform a neighborhood, generate investment, create jobs and provide residents with better places to live, work, and play.

Ride your bike to the Watts Towers on January 22nd, 2012 -- it is easier than you think!
Your stories from this ride will be used to produce a new map of South LA to show visitors how biking reveals the best of our neighborhood!
Meet at 10am at Augustus Hawkins Natural Park -- bring your ordinary cell phone or camera if you have one.
SPECIAL FEATURES: At the towers the Eastside Riders will host a bike tour of the community featuring the Watts Labor Community Action Center. At the starting park we will also have a short Bike Fitting and Maintenance workshop sponsored by Bikerowave and CICLE (a project of LA County RENEW).
BRING YOUR CELL PHONE OR CAMERA. We are also asking ride participants to bring their cellphones (any model) to take photos and text/voice notes along the ride to help make a map of our ride that can help promote more biking in South LA! This mapping project is in partnership with http://ParTour.net -- a project of USC Annenberg's Mobile Lab and the Metamorphosis project.
This ride is organized by the CicLAvia South LA Host Committee and T.R.U.S.T. South LA. Last year we successfully promoted the need for a pedestrian event on the scale of CicLAvia in South LA. On Thursday, January 19, 2012 at noon, in the beautiful Bovard Auditorium of the University of Southern California (USC) the Black Staff and Faculty Caucus will host its 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. This event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Tribute in Song (“MLK: A Tribute in Song”) celebrates Dr. King through a multimedia presentation along with words and songs performed by Daniels-Ball, an alumna of USC’s world-renowned Thornton School of Music. Essentially, MLK: A Tribute in Song takes the audience on a musical journey highlighting the milestones of Dr. King’s legendary life that ended too soon almost 44 years ago on April 4, 1968.
Written by writer-producer, J.M. Morris -- a former King Center National Scholar and intern for Mrs. King – MLK: A Tribute in Song was inspired by her stage trilogy presented for three consecutive years in recognition of the King Holiday. The three entries in the series were: The Content of Their Character; The Content of Their Character: Courage; and The Content of Their Character: Religion.
The USC Bovard Auditorium is located at 3551 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles, CA 90089. For further information, please call (213) 740-9252 or email brass@usc.edu.

Legendary civil rights leader, Rev. James Lawson, is the event’s keynote speaker. Rev. Eric Lee and SCLC Los Angeles will receive Special Recognition Awards.
Local community and labor groups with strong ties to African American and Latino community in South Los Angeles are coming together to sponsor an annual Los Angeles tradition in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
This year’s breakfast will focus on the same issue that Dr. King fought for more than 40 years ago—income equality. African American and Latino residents living side-by-side in Los Angeles’ poorest community are facing some of the worst economic conditions in the United States today. These are the same issues that Dr. King took on in his Poor People’s Campaign in 1968 before he was assassinated. Jobs, income and housing were the issues tackled in 1968. These are still the issues that South L.A. faces today.
The breakfast will bring together some of Los Angeles’ leaders from faith, labor, elected office and community groups as well as both African American and Latino neighbors. KABC 7 News anchor Leslie Sykes is the Mistress of Ceremonies.
The event is part of Community Coalition’s series of events celebrating and honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King. Community Coalition is leading the “Occupy King’s Dream: We are the 99%” float with 200+ South L.A. residents at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012.

Originally envisioned by George L. Crenshaw as one of the region’s premier real estate tracts before the area even became a part of Los Angeles in 1909, Lafayette Square’s design was based on European cities, inspired to bring a feeling of tradition and graceful style not widely found in a very young Los Angeles.
Crenshaw’s son Charles described the Square, and its central drive, St. Charles Place, as “a ‘Spanish pasear,’ a place where residents could stroll and meet socially.” Over time, Lafayette Square became home to many of Los Angeles’ luminaries including George Pepperdine, Sepulveda family descendent Princess Conchita Pignatelli, Fatty Arbuckle, Alexander Pantages, Norton Simon, boxer Joe Louis, singer Little Richard, and architect Paul R. Williams.
Come with us this holiday season to experience the founder’s vision, as we stroll door to door, and socialize over a sumptuous meal, served one course at a time in each of the lavishly-decorated homes we visit.
Prepaid Reservations are required for the Holiday Tour & Progressive Dinner.

Lonnie David Franklin Jr. was a member of the South Los Angeles community his entire adult life and continues to be the focus of the Task Force investigation. The photographs made public since his arrest have also been members of the community.A flyer depicting the still unidentified women will also be handed out in an effort to encourage community participation in identifying the photographs.

South Los Angeles Beautification Project (9 am)
(Century Blvd., on Interstate 110-S on/off ramps)
For better or worse, the freeway on and off ramps are the front doors to many South Los Angeles neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the present condition sends the wrong message, making entry to South LA feel frightening and looking more like a third- world country than the United States of America. Under the leadership of the board of directors of Watts Gang Task Force (WGTF) has partnered with CalTrans who have agreed to join the South Los Angeles Beautification Project and turn this into a quarterly event. The South LA on/off ramps will be cleaned, landscaped, graffiti removed and welcoming signage posted. In summary, beautified.
The first South Los Angeles Beautification Project will be held on October 29th at Century Blvd., on Interstate 110-S on/off ramps, starting at 9:00am. TreePeople has agreed to partner with us and assist in neighborhood tree planting efforts. Coffee, snacks and lunch will be provided, along with t-shirts and hats for the volunteers.
Every dollar counts! As a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization, a tax-deductible receipt will be issued to you on behalf of Watts Gang Task Force, and you will be mentioned in all event publicity. CalTrans, LAPD, California Governor Jerry Brown, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Los Angeles City Council Office #15, Los Angeles Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and local businesses will be assisting in this effort.
Donations and/or volunteer time and effort are highly appreciated! Please contact Tanna Moore at tmoore@challc.com or (310)826-1342 who will provide instruction on how to donate and participate in this inspiring event. LAPD will be present to provide public safety and safe passage.
