BLOG: Fitness Zones are popping up around South L.A.

imageThe Trust for Public Land is taking a more pro-“active” stance on weight-loss in South Los Angeles.

On January 14, Los Angeles City Councilmember Jan Perry dedicated the first of six free Fitness Zones in South Los Angeles parks.

"According to the LA County Department of Public Health, 37.8 percent of adults are obese in the community surrounding South Park," said Perry in a press release. "This Fitness Zone…will provide much-needed free physical activity opportunities for the entire neighborhood."

The Fitness Zones include six to eight pieces of weather-resistant equipment that the Trust for Public Land says are “appropriate for teenagers (thirteen and older) and adults of all fitness levels.”

The goal of the Fitness Zones is to make “Los Angeles-area parks safer, more inviting, and more active.”

"Studies have shown that providing free and easy to use exercise equipment dramatically increases the opportunity to engage in physical activity," said Jon Mukri, General Manager, City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, in a press release. "The Fitness Zones have become hubs of community activity by creating a group atmosphere that feels social and helps people be more active."

Great Job. Well needed. I hope there are signs that say for 13 years old and older, use at your own risk; with a note to parents to avoid children. You probably have something like that; just a thought to protect yourself; I wouldn't want to hear that you have done a good deed and some one tries to find a away to abuse it.
