BLOG: Fox Theater goes to highest bidder
A piece of Hollywood history is for sale in Inglewood.Located at 115 Market St., the Fox Theater sits in the heart of Inglewood’s downtown.
Sperry Van Ness Accelerated Marketing announced on January 20 that the historic art-deco theater will be sold through a sealed-bid auction. The minimum bid is set at $200,000.
"This is a fantastic opportunity to redevelop a grand theatre from days gone by and at a fraction of the value," said David Gilmore, the managing director of Sperry Van Ness Accelerated Marketing in a press release.
During the 1950s, the Fox Theater was a hotspot for the Hollywood glitterati.
It featured a new architectural style that the Theatre Historical Society of America called “Art Moderne meets Streamlined.” Built in the Skouras style, the theater also boasted a luxurious interior.
The theater’s 1008 seats were often filled with celebrities, as it hosted several movie premieres. Marilyn Monroe and the Three Stooges are said to have attended premieres at the Fox Theater. But Fox Theater moviegoers saw their last showing in 1984. Since then, the theater has remained dormant. It is currently owned by former NFL player Mark Fields.
Both the exterior and interior of the theater need renovation, but Sperry Van Ness said that several of the original fixtures and projection equipment remain intact.
The Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation told Curbed LA that the Community Redevelopment Agency has considered the property as a possible entertainment and events venue.
“Significance and preservation notwithstanding, the Inglewood Fox should be viewed as an economic development and downtown revitalization project," the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation said in an email to Curbed LA.
Bids for the Fox Theater are due on February 5.
