Hates crimes down in L.A. County
Crime has dropped a bit in Los Angeles County. So it may not be surprising that hate crimes went down four-percent in 2008. But still, crimes that target someone for their race, sexual orientation or religion remain a problem in a county as diverse as Los Angeles. Stephanie Guzman of Annenberg Radio News reports on the 2008 study issued by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations.
Hate Crime Statistics from the 2008 Hate Crimes Report
- Hate Crimes declined four percent, from 763 reported cases to 729 reported cases.
- African Americans remained the most targeted group at 61 percent.
- Hate crimes between African Americans and Latinos: Black victims of hate crimes were targeted by Latinos 69 percent of the time. Latinos were targeted by blacks 61 percent of the time.
- Gang members were responsible for 22 percent of racial hate crimes
- The majority of hate crimes were committed in personal residences or in a public place.
- Sixteen percent of all hate crimes were motivated by religion. The majority were anti-Jewish at 65 percent.
