Man arrested for hit-and-run that killed Compton teenager
A man suspected to causing the death of a 16-year-old Compton teenager Sunday night has been arrested. Juan Garay, 22, of Compton is being charged with driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of the accident. Chanel Lenard, 16, was walking with a friend on 154th Street at Aprilia Avenue in Compton on Sunday night, around 12:30am, when a Mercury Voyager van going 60 mph struck her. Lenard was pronounced dead at the scene. Lenard's friend was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Lynwood where she is in serious but stable condition, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Garay was located within an hour of the incident thanks to a description of his vehicle. According to officers, the suspect appeared to be drunk and failed a sobriety test.
Lenard's mother said she was a good student at Compton High School and liked to read. Leonard had a curfew Saturday night and was on her way home after attending a party at a friend's house.
