Mayor Villaraigosa and Education Secretary Arne Duncan visit Samuel Gompers Middle School
Education Secretary Arne Duncan is making a two-day pit stop at Samuel Gompers Middle School in South LA. In his brief speech during yesterday's press conference, Duncan said that LA's schools, with all the challenges and diversity, could become the "model urban school district for the nation." School board president Monica Garcia echoed his sentiment, saying "yes we can. Yes, Los Angeles will be the country's model for urban reform." Garcia recommended that Duncan "invest in LA" and help transform the system. Some teachers in attendance, however, were skeptical of the scene, suggesting that the rhetoric was typical of the agenda-pushing education leaders and "empty with no substance."
