Saving the arts in Compton

By mdEUCE

I recently had the opportunity to interview Mr. Judson Powell regarding a cultural arts center he has established (along with many other elder artists and craftsmen) in Compton:

Since meeting Mr. Powell and seeing all the wonderful things he has done with the old National Guard Armory, I am greatly interested in seeing that this arts center gets the support needed to remain right where it is. It is to my understanding that they have until June 1 to stay there unless the city does something about the National Guard wanting to return to this space and use it for urban terrorist training. If anyone has any ideas on how we can make it so the art center stays put, please feel free to share them in the comments here on Hub City Livin'.

I just think it would be a terrible thing if they had to go. It's already bad enough that they have been there for some time now and have not gotten support for what they have established. I mean, where else can you go to see actual shackles from slavery (among other things) in Compton? Or where else can the youth learn to shape glass or hone in on their artistic skills and inherent talents?

For more on the story, read "Future of armory property undecided" in the Compton Bulletin.
